The name

One before you ride on

A stirrup cup was the drink handed up to a rider already in the saddle, a last glass before setting off.

It was usually port or sherry, served at the door to a departing guest or to the hunt before it moved away. The cups themselves had no foot, so they couldn’t be set down. Many were made in silver or Staffordshire pottery in the shape of a fox’s or hound’s head.

We think it’s a good name for a pub on the road through Bisley. Stop in, have one, then carry on.
